Class introduction:

Work at your own pace. View any demos that are related to your needs and interests. The demos for the Introduction to Digital Art are related specifically with learning to use Photoshop plus the use of basic art and design concepts: line, shape, color, texture, space and form. Since you are in the advanced class, I assume you are familiar with Photoshop tools and interface. Please ask questions as needed during our meeting during lab time.

If you are working during the demos/lectures given for the beginning class, keep in mind the students’ needs to focus on the demo and do not talk to your neighbor or allow them to speak with you unless outside the classroom. They will be more interested in what you are doing rather than the demo.

Day 2		Bring in your previous digital artwork Do a self portrait using photoshop. It can be abstract, representational, painted, or use photographs. Basicly open as far as form and content. It only needs to be a portrait of you in some way.

Day 5 Feb. 13		Assignment2: Find an artist whose style you like and create an image from scratch based on the artist style. For example: you like Van Gogh’s Starry Night, you create an image using his style but not his subject matter. Or, Georgia O’Keefe. Or Frida Kahlo. Or Diego Rivera, or other. This will take some research in the library and/or online.

Day 10		Assignment 2 Due Assignment 3 Working with a Panoramic Format For this assignment you will create an image with a panoramic/wide angle view and the format should be extremely horizontal. You can create an imaginary scene within this format, draw and paint a landscape from nature, or seam together a series of photos. Imagine yourself being able to see and have a solid image of your peripheral vision. To do this with a camera, you take a series of shots, rotating only your body and make sure you have extensive overlap between the images. If you use photographs, you can combine them using the photomerge process. You can then manipulate the image as you wish. Think of a concept you want to illustrate in this wide format. Content, creativity and originality are key.

Use any technique in phtotoshop that you want. The final image should be around 1000 pixels on a side with layers intact. Be prepared to discuss your creative decisions.

Day 25 May 1		Assignment 7: Create a spoof ad like the examples on the adbusters site. Follow the process outlined there. The method you use is up to you. For example, the image can have elements drawn by hand or in photoshop, or it can be composed of composited photographs. You can also use text. You will do a rough sketch to show next week. Specifications: Image size about 1200px by 900px,either vertical or horizontal Leave layers separate Turn in PSD file The images can be scanned, photographed, found(internet) or drawn. The images can be about the formal concerns of art like line, color and shape;or they can be about your point of view about a concept, like war or global warming. Either way, the images should work together as a body of work(a collection of developed and assembled works that represents an investigation or study).
